Dreams Denied

I remembered something yesterday - something I hadn't thought about in years.

I suddenly remembered my 5th grade classroom and we were having to get up and give impromtu speeches on anything that came to our minds. Naturally, me (the future theatre major) popped up and down several times (who says public speaking isn't fun?).

My last topic was on becoming the president. I distinctly remember saying, "I would like to be president. Wouldn't you?" My teacher gravely shook her head and said, "Oh,no, women can't be president."

I was wounded and hurt. My thought as I went back to my desk, "Why ever not?"  We had been studying the presidency - no where in the rules did it say anything about gender as a qualifying factor.

Seems today - most major European countries have had or have a woman leader.  The world hasn't gone to pieces. Yet, in the good 'ole US of A, the concept makes men shiver and, I suspect, wake up in a cold sweat during the night.

The US - the most advanced and with the most opportunity - yet still - still -

Among things that men seem to fear most is - us.

H.C. may have put 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling - it's only a matter of time.

  • I'm not a big Hillary fan, but generally speaking I think a woman president would be great for this country. It's probably safe to say that a leader of the "gentler sex" would be much less likely to wage wars of aggression, torture children in front of their parents, and so on.

  • Steve: You know I appreciate you saying that. Maybe H.C. wasn't the woman for this fight - yet, if not her, who? She already knew the players was as well funded as the men, and had the education and brilliance to enter the ring as it is now. Barak Obama babbles to me about change; again I ask - change what, when, and how? Democrats don't remember Jimmy Carter, a good man - gone on to be a great humanitarian - but not a Washington insider. Many of his best ideas were stalled and went down before Congress, because he wasn't as the kids say 'a playa'. That's why I say the only way to put a woman in office is through a united women's party. Nice hearing from you again - and still...nice hat :)

  • Thanks (for the hat compliment). You know, speaking of Jimmy C., it's interesting to note that his national security advisor was Zbigniew Brzezinski -- a CFR/Trilateral lynchpin who, until recently, was a top foreign policy advisor to Obama (chances are he's still "handling" Obama behind the scenes). If you never heard of ZB, check him out. The guy is BAD NEWS.

  • Wow, I wonder what I would have thought if I were told that men could not be president. It might have shook my world in a similar fashion.
